White Hoods and Red Hats

America has seen this kind of movement before. The uniforms have changed. The politics of fear, grievance, belonging, and restoration feel disturbingly familiar.

Below is a photograph from the 1920s. Thousands of members of the Ku Klux Klan are marching through Washington in white robes and pointed hoods. They are not hiding in the woods or meeting secretly somewhere in the South. They are walking openly through the capital as part of a mass political movement that, at its peak, counted millions of members.
