The problem is that affection behaves like a decorative gourd. It looks seasonal and heartfelt on the porch, then contributes very little once the weather changes. Simone put it more directly. “People support small farms in the same way they support clean rivers,” she said. “Emotionally, symbolically, and at a safe distance from the budgeting process.”

The sheep said the broader reality now feels painfully clear. Small family farms make up the overwhelming majority of farms in America, yet the economics keep tightening around them like a polite but determined boa constrictor. Costs rise. Margins narrow. Debt swells. The public still wants beauty, local food, open land, and the reassuring fantasy that someone somewhere is growing a real tomato with dignity. The farm, meanwhile, is expected to produce crops, preserve landscape, create jobs, host visitors, maintain character, and smile like a brochure with knees.

Marvin said this is how a civilization turns a farmer into a multi-platform content creator with a weed trimmer. Whitney called it “an extraction model wrapped in nostalgia.” Bruce and Frankie asked whether admiration could be monetized through a VIP flower bucket tier.

By sunset, the flock had reached a practical conclusion. Small farms keep losing because the country keeps asking them to carry economic, cultural, ecological, and emotional weight while funding them like a charming side character. Everyone says they matter. The sheep believe the future will belong to the farms that find a second business, a third revenue stream, and a stronger way to turn public love into something that can actually keep the gate on its hinges.

Sheep Charged With Loitering In His Own Field

After one sheep was charged with loitering in his own field, the flock began to suspect the country has developed a broader discomfort with people simply being where they already are.

The Daily Pasture

The sheep were shaken this week after one member of the flock was charged with loitering in his own field, an incident Janet described as “jurisdictionally creative” and Marvin described as “what happens when a society starts treating ordinary presence like an unattended backpack at an airport Chili’s.”

According to witnesses, the sheep in question had been standing in a perfectly routine patch of grass, facing west with a thoughtful expression and no immediate plans beyond existing, when he was informed that his lingering posture had raised concerns. Across the country, people are increasingly being confronted, detained, or processed while doing ordinary things in ordinary places. A recent investigation found that a large majority of ICE arrests in New York and New Jersey targeted Latinos, often during street encounters while people were walking, shopping, or heading to work. At the same time, federal officials have drawn up plans that could halt immigration and customs processing at airports in so-called sanctuary cities, extending the same mood of scrutiny into spaces once associated with movement and routine travel.

Whitney called the field incident “anxious governance with boundary issues.” Simone said the real offense was ease, because systems built around control eventually start reacting to comfort the way Victorian aunts reacted to ankles. Janet asked for a copy of the citation. Marvin requested the metadata, a soil sample, and the names of everyone who had been near the fence line since Tuesday.

By sunset, the sheep had reached a broader conclusion. A field works best when the creatures in it can graze, pause, and look mildly contemplative without triggering an intake procedure. A country probably does too.

"Freedom Farm" Chapter 16

The animals assembled before dawn.

The Daily Pasture

The animals assembled before dawn. Frost slicked every plank and stone. The sun caught in the orchard and did nothing to warm the yard. Sheep shivered in tight blocks, hooves sunk to the ankles in brown ice. The goats were herded forward with jabs of the Patriot Guards’ switches. The cows, hulking and dumb-eyed, formed a barricade at the rear, heads lowered as if bracing for some impact.

The porch steps gleamed with polish, their wood scrubbed so clean it reflected the orange of the farm’s new flag. Above them, Boss Rudd loomed, his fleece freshly combed and glowing in the first slice of morning. He stood with arms out, a scarecrow made of muscle and teeth. At his flanks, two Patriot Guards stood at parade rest, switches leveled, faces scrubbed and set.

Rudd waited until every animal faced him. He let the silence sink in, a chokehold on the yard, then raised both hooves.

“Security briefing!” he barked.

The yard hushed. Breath smoked from sheep and goat alike.

Rudd’s voice cracked the chill. “Last night, our sources confirmed: Chester Gilt is coming. He’s bringing outsiders. Legal, illegal, doesn’t matter. He wants North Star Farm.”

A ripple moved through the sheep, but none dared speak. Rudd scanned the yard, eyes like augers, and let his words drill.

“They want to take what you worked for. The hay, the trough, your lives. Chester doesn’t care about you. You know that. The only thing worse than a traitor…” he jerked his head at the barn, where the Seven Commandments glared in fresh paint “…is a traitor who pretends he’s family.”

A low bleat from the flock’s center, instantly silenced by a Guard’s glare.

Rudd paced the porch, each word coming sharp, short, like stones thrown at a window.

“This is an existential threat. The wall must hold. If it fails, we are done. Do you understand?”

Some sheep nodded. A few goats rolled their eyes, heads down. One of the cows snorted, just once, then went still again.

Rudd stopped at the porch edge, leaned in. “I alone will keep you safe,” he said. “You want to see your lambs next year, you listen to me. You want the trough full, you obey. Chester Gilt wants you weak and stupid. I want you strong.”

He let it hang, then sneered. “Any animal caught spreading doubt, caught sneaking food, caught talking to the so-called resistance…” he gestured at the barn, “…will answer to me. And to the wall.”

The Guards snapped their switches, the crack echoing off the silo.

The speech was over, but Rudd did not step back. He scanned every face, hunting for challenge. Only one or two dared meet his gaze.

From the rear, Bleatrix Spinn approached, her clipboard bristling with notes. She took position behind Rudd, eyes moving from yard to porch and back.

Rudd turned to the Guards. “Brief them on today’s security upgrades. Then commence the loyalty audit.”

The crowd groaned, almost inaudible.

On the periphery, Bruce and Frankie had already started to move.

They sidled along the fence, blending with a group of goats who cared nothing for loyalty, only for the prospect of the next meal. The twins communicated in glances and the tiniest tilts of their heads. When the Guards barked, Bruce joined the stampede for the trough, but kept his nose low, his ears sharper than ever.

Frankie peeled off at the edge of the tool shed, ducking behind a pile of rotted tarps. He waited, counting the seconds, then popped his head out and caught Bruce’s eye. Bruce made the “all clear” sign - an old trick from when they’d once broken into Chester’s feed room together, so many seasons ago. Frankie shot forward, sprinting the short gap to the irrigation control panel half-buried in caked straw.

It was a masterpiece of pre-revolt engineering: a rusted box with levers chewed by rodents, two colored dials, and a nest of wires patched by a goat with only the faintest clue of how anything worked. Frankie ran his tongue along the edge, searching for the hidden catch. He found it, popped the panel, and ducked out of sight as a Security ram stomped by.

Inside the panel, the instructions had long since dissolved in a soup of old water and grime, but Frankie had memorized them months ago. He nudged the blue dial left, the red right, then set his teeth on the main valve and turned it with a grunt.

It contains arithmetic, seasonality, cash flow, debt avoidance, labor reality, and a fairly direct conversation with the modern American farm economy. It also contains a little humility, because I am an experienced businessman and a beginner farmer, which is a funny combination. One part of me still wants to solve problems with systems and spreadsheets. The other part is just entering my third season as a blueberry farmer and learning, with regular correction, that plants, weather, and markets do not care much about your previous résumé.

That has probably been good for me.

It has also made something very clear. A small farm in America often needs more than one engine. It needs a crop, yes. It also needs direct sales, hospitality, events, creativity, and a willingness to build revenue in places the old romantic picture of farming never included. That picture still matters to me. I love the bushes, the rows, and the simple dignity of growing something real in the ground and handing it to a person who will eat it. I love the seasonality of it. I love the fact that blueberries arrive on their own schedule and reward attention rather than speed.

Still, affection does not pay every bill.

That is the part I think people often miss when they picture a farm. They picture the berries, the barn, the field at golden hour, the little bit of dust in the light. They picture a slower, more beautiful life. Sometimes that picture is true. It is also incomplete. A farm is a living system and a business system at the same time. It has fuel costs, equipment costs, labor questions, insurance, taxes, repairs, timing problems, weather risks, and the steady psychological pressure of knowing that your margin can disappear because one thing broke, one rain came at the wrong time, or one market moved in a direction that had nothing to do with the quality of your work.

Blueberries are a wonderful crop. They are also a seasonal crop. The income comes in a window. The expenses behave like they live year-round. The land needs care in all seasons. The plants need attention in all seasons. Infrastructure has no emotional attachment to harvest season. It breaks when it wants.

I came to understand fairly quickly that if North Star Farm was going to have a real future, it would need to speak more than one economic language. It would need to produce fruit and hospitality. It would need to sell blueberries and overnight stays. It would need to be a farm and also a place people could experience. The domes grew out of that realization.

I understand how that sounds to some people. There is a version of the critique that says once you build domes, once you host guests, once you create experiences, you have somehow drifted away from the real thing. I do not see it that way. I think that idea belongs to a version of farming that asks small farms to live inside a purity test while the broader economy moves on without them. I think many of the people who speak most romantically about farming have never had to make payroll, maintain land, repair infrastructure, absorb bad timing, and carry a property through a year in which one revenue stream simply was not enough.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" They support the farm. They allow the farm to breathe. They allow us to keep doing the agricultural work with more strength and more possibility. They allow the land to carry more value than raw yield alone. Small farms have always created more than food. They create memory, place, stewardship, identity, beauty, and social fabric. The domes simply gave some of that value a clearer economic form.

There is also a deeper truth here. People are hungry for contact with places that still feel alive. They want beauty, quiet, and the chance to walk outside at dusk and hear something besides traffic and panic. They want to pick berries with their children, sit in a hot tub under the trees, and look up and remember that they have a body, that seasons are real, that food comes from somewhere, that a day can still have texture. I do not think that desire is frivolous. I think it is one of the more honest market signals we have.

So the domes are practical and they are also human. They answer an economic need and a cultural one at the same time.

That said, I want to keep my own self-understanding honest. I am still learning how to farm, the pace of blueberry season, what the bushes will teach if I pay attention long enough. I know business better than I know agriculture and that probably shows. It also means I came into this with fewer inherited illusions. I looked at the numbers and the land at the same time. I looked at the rhythms of the crop and the fixed costs of the property. I looked at what the farm could be in a spreadsheet and what it could mean in a person’s life. The domes came from that overlap.

Some people imagine diversification as mission drift. I see it as mission protection.

The farm, the berries, and the land still matter. The sheep, the flowers, the trails, the pond, the events, the Saturday mornings, the conversations by the fire pit, all of that matters too. This place works because it has become more than one thing. It grows fruit, hosts rest, and gives people access to a different pace. It lets the land work with greater range and turns a fragile, single-stream model into something more resilient and more alive.

I think a lot of small farms are facing this same question now, whether they say it out loud or not. What does it take to stay open, keep the land intact, and continue doing honest work in an economy that often rewards scale, sameness, and speed? For us, one answer was the domes.

We built them because the farm needed another pillar, because beauty has value, and because land can nourish people in more than one way.

We built them because a modern small farm often needs multiple forms of revenue to protect the core agricultural one.

We built them because North Star Farm deserved a future sturdy enough to hold the berries, the people, and the place itself.

That is the simple version. The longer version is that I want this farm to keep living. I want the blueberry rows to keep producing and the sheep to keep wandering through the field with the confidence of minor officials. I want families to come here and remember what connection feels like. I want the whole place to keep making its case for a more grounded, more beautiful, more human way of living.

The domes help make that possible.

Justin
Opinion Americans are traveling in large numbers for milestone experiences this year, with AAA reporting that 61% plan to travel in 2026 and 76% of those travelers centering trips around birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and other events that invite a stronger outfit choice. Lodging away from home also rose again in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which Bruce said proved that people are now paying more everywhere and might as well do it near blueberries.

Frankie immediately endorsed the theory and began referring to the outer rows as “the quieter side of the property.” Whitney said the field did carry a certain emotional brightness. Fancy Pants replied that brightness and coastal prestige remain separate concepts and should continue to do so. Janet asked Bruce to stop calling the bucket station “the provision desk.”

The sheep said the larger confusion came from tone. TSA says it is staffed and ready for a busy summer travel kickoff, while AAA projects record travel, which helps explain why Bruce looked at a crowded summer season and concluded the farm needed a luxury identity with stronger social ambition.

Marvin objected that the field was becoming “narratively overzoned for aspiration.” Bruce said that was exactly what made it premium. By sunset, the flock had accepted a narrow compromise. The blueberry field may remain inland, agricultural, and functionally unsalted by ocean air. It now also carries, thanks to Bruce, the faint social atmosphere of a place where someone might discuss real estate while holding a berry bucket with unnecessary conviction.

Future You Will Be Annoyed

Two minutes today could save you money for years.

The Daily Pasture

Dear Reader,

There are exactly four kinds of Daily Pasture readers:

Paid subscribers who locked in the lower price.

Paid subscribers who lock in the lower price this week.

People who plan to upgrade later.

People who become unexpectedly familiar with regret.

On June 19, subscription pricing increases to $8/month or $80/year.

Anyone who upgrades before then keeps today’s lower pricing for as long as they maintain their subscription.

This is one of those rare situations where procrastination has a specific dollar amount attached to it.

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a paid subscriber, consider this your friendly reminder from the sheep.

They are many things.

Financial advisors are not among them.

PS: If you're already a paid subscriber, thank you. It is about a culture that keeps asking living things to produce more, faster, and with a positive attitude toward heat. OSHA warns that hazardous heat exposure can occur outdoors in any season under the right conditions and that heavy physical activity in hot environments raises the risk of heat illness. The sheep said this should have settled the matter immediately.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Fancy Pants described the current mowing standard as “a useful maintenance concept that has wandered into ideology.” Whitney called it “burnout with clippings.” Bruce and Frankie asked whether the campaign could include a twilight reel and matching headbands.

The flock said the timing felt painfully modern. U.S. productivity surged in late 2025 even as job creation slowed sharply, reinforcing the broader national impression that systems remain very interested in output and only lightly curious about the organisms producing it. The sheep said the lawn had clearly absorbed this message and was now presenting itself as a 24-hour growth opportunity.

By sunset, the sheep reached a simple conclusion. A healthy field benefits from care, pace, and a little strategic roughness. A field with dignity offers room for grass, workers, and weather to exist without constant correction. The campaign will continue until management embraces a more humane standard, or until Marvin proves the lower meadow has been collaborating with Big Lawn all along.

Six Days Left to Lock In Current Pricing

The Daily Pasture subscription price increases June 19.

The Daily Pasture

Dear Reader,

A quick note for current paid subscribers: Thank you for helping keep the sheep employed. The frost didn’t yield so much as hang back, clinging to the low spots and the bottoms of fence posts. Above, the sky ran a steady blue, brighter than seemed right for the cold that bit under the wool. There were patches where grass already poked through, sharp and slick, and tiny buds the color of broken teeth had begun to split the orchard branches.

Most mornings, the animals gathered in a muddle near the feeding trough, waiting for the Security Committee to unlock the new ration bins. On this morning, they clustered in clumps, talking in low voices about the past week - the barn’s ruin, the fire, the trenchwork, and the awkward new order that had not quite replaced the old one. The sheep came first, followed by the goats in their patchy winter coats. The cows lingered in the far pasture, chewing slow, but their eyes stayed fixed on the yard. Even the chickens, who kept to the barn’s shadow, had come out to scratch at the muddy edge of the trough zone.

The cows heard it first: the slap of hooves against thawing ground, and the ragged, unsteady breathing of something running for its life. The animals turned as one, heads up, ears sharp. From the south fence, a messenger sheep barreled into the yard, foam on her lips and eyes wild. She stumbled once, caught herself, and careened into the circle of animals, nearly plowing over a lamb before stopping.

“They’re coming!” she panted, then coughed, spitting out a chunk of half-swallowed straw. She tried again. “It’s Chester Gilt. He’s…he’s filed with the court. He wants the farm back.”

No one spoke. For a beat, the yard froze.

The flowers bring something important to the farm. They bring color, occasion, softness, and a very strong argument for walking more slowly than modern life usually permits. They also arrive at exactly the right time. June remains one of the year’s great ceremonial months, with wedding season in full swing and the summer solstice approaching on June 20, giving the Northern Hemisphere its longest day of the year.

Whitney described the addition as “an expansion of the farm’s emotional infrastructure.” Fancy Pants called it “a smart seasonal broadening of the aesthetic portfolio.” Janet said the flowers should be enjoyed with care, boundaries, and an understanding that beauty still benefits from orderly foot traffic. Marvin warned that blooms this vivid often carry “narrative implications,” though no one followed up on that.

The sheep said the larger timing also felt strangely perfect. Flower season opens at a moment when many people are rethinking how they celebrate and what beauty is worth. Americans planning weddings and other milestones have been looking for more grounded, lower-cost, and more personal ways to gather, while the flower industry itself has been under pressure from tariffs and rising costs. Under those conditions, a local field of flowers feels less like a luxury and more like a small act of practical sanity.

By sunset, the flock had reached a cheerful conclusion. Food prices remain elevated, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that food prices rose 2.9% from January 2025 to January 2026 and food away from home rose 4.0% over the same period. Breakfast now carries a little more economic weight, which may explain why people speak about it with the tense seriousness once reserved for maritime treaties.

Whitney insisted that lateness is often just a conflict between the body and an overmanaged culture. Marvin agreed immediately and claimed breakfast had been delayed by “larger grain interests.” Bruce and Frankie said they supported any framework in which noon could still be considered a breakfast-adjacent hour if the beverage was reflective enough.

By late morning, which Whitney described as “an interpretive category,” the flock had accepted a more compassionate standard. A field works better when living things receive food with dignity and pace. A morning grows kinder when fewer creatures are asked to prove their worth before coffee. In that spirit, the sheep agreed that breakfast had arrived exactly when it was prepared to contribute.

Your Daily Pasture Rate Is Being Grandfathered In

Lock in today's pricing before June 19. never phone it in. We have worked hard to keep that promise every single day. As The Daily Pasture continues to grow, delivering best-in-class satire requires continued investment in both the farm and the content itself. To ensure I can keep raising the bar rather than lowering it, subscription prices will increase on June 19th to $8 per month or $80 per year.

If you are already a paid subscriber, nothing changes for you. Your current subscription price is locked in and will remain the same for as long as you maintain your active subscription.

If you are currently a free subscriber and have been considering upgrading, now is the time. Between now and June 19th, you can still lock in the current subscription pricing. Once the new pricing takes effect, all new paid subscriptions will be charged $8/month or $80/year.

One important note: if you are a paid subscriber and cancel your subscription in the future, then later decide to rejoin, you will be charged the pricing in effect at that time. Your current rate is reserved exclusively for active subscribers who maintain their subscriptions without interruption.

I never take your support for granted. It is not a retreat from organic farming or a quiet slide into compromise. It is, in my view, the opposite. It is a decision rooted in clarity.

This Substack is reader-supported. We use sun and water. We do not spray. We care deeply about soil, ecology, and growing food in a way that honors the land. That part remains unchanged. What is changing is our willingness to keep paying tribute to a certification structure that has drifted so far into process worship, deadline games, administrative opacity, and revenue extraction that it now feels spiritually indistinguishable from the very bureaucracies many of us fled when we came to farming in the first place.

I should say at the outset that I am not writing this as some multigenerational farmer whose hands emerged from the womb already calloused. I am writing it as a beginner farmer. This is only my third season as a blueberry farmer. I came to this world after a career in business. That background gives me two relevant disabilities. First, I still occasionally believe systems should do what they claim to do. Second, I have seen enough organizations from the inside to know when mission has given way to machinery.

This is what happened here.

For several years, North Star Farm has been certified by an organization with a good reputation. Every year the certification has to be renewed. That means paperwork, updates to the organic farming plan, online portal submissions, inspections, scheduling, time, and fees. USDA’s own materials make clear that certification must be renewed annually, that the operation must submit annual updates to its Organic System Plan, and that costs can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the certifier and the operation.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I filled out all the paperwork. I updated the organic farming plan in their software portal. I hosted an auditor on site. I spent many hours doing the cumbersome administrative work that now seems to accompany every effort to prove that one is exactly the kind of farmer one has already been. After I submitted everything online, I called the organization to confirm that everything looked correct and that we were set for the 2026 season. I was told everything looked good.

Then, months later, we received a letter in the mail saying our certification had been suspended because we had missed the filing deadline.

At this point I entered the part of modern life that everyone recognizes and nobody respects: being transferred around the office until you finally reach the one person who has the actual answer and delivers it with the serene confidence of someone reading from a procedural shrine. The person in the certification department told me I was supposed to send her an email after submitting all the paperwork so she would know it had been filed. She acknowledged that we had done everything correctly other than that.

That was the moment the whole thing snapped into focus for me.

The issue was no longer organic integrity. The issue was no longer food. The issue was no longer helping a farmer grow clean fruit and helping a consumer trust what he is buying. The issue had become the preservation of a bureaucratic ritual. We had followed the process. We had submitted the documents. We had hosted the inspection. We had called to verify that everything was complete. Still, we were told that our only path forward was to reapply, redo the paperwork, schedule another audit, and pay thousands of dollars in fees to be reinstated.

I have seen enough businesses in my life to recognize a system that has become dependent on friction. Friction justifies staff. Friction justifies fees. Friction justifies power. Friction creates the feeling that something serious is happening, even when the actual value being created approaches zero.

That is my problem with the organic certification world as I have experienced it. It has become a bureaucracy first and a mission second.

I realize that some people will hear this and think, well, rules are rules. Fine. Rules have a place. Standards have a place. Verification has a place. Trust matters. Consumers deserve honesty. I agree with all of that. I would even say that those goals are the reason many of us embraced certification in the first place.

But a healthy standards regime helps honest people demonstrate what they are already doing. A captured bureaucracy trains honest people to spend their time proving themselves to clerks. A healthy system looks for alignment between practice and principle. A decayed system looks for technical default and fee-generating reentry points. A mission-centered certifier wants farmers in the system. A process-centered certifier wants farmers subordinate to the system.

The irony here is thick enough to spread on toast. The organization that suspended us has done nothing but take from us while presenting itself as a partner in organic agriculture. They have asked to use our farm for farm days so other farmers could come learn how we farm organically and regeneratively using only sun and water and no spray. I gave them a full day of my time and did it for free. They asked us to sponsor their annual event and purchase a table. We did it without question because we wanted to be supportive. They asked me to write articles for their magazine. I wrote three. They put us on the cover once. They said they would pay me $100 for each article. I have not seen a dime.

That pattern tells a story.

It tells me this organization sees farmers as a source of value extraction. We are there to provide content, legitimacy, sponsorship revenue, demonstration sites, and administrative compliance. In return, we get a certificate, a set of annual hurdles, and eventually a letter informing us that despite doing everything we were told to do, we failed to satisfy the hidden ritual known as sending the extra email to the right person at the right time.

This is not organic integrity. This is an organic certification mafia.

I use that phrase deliberately, though with a certain amount of self-awareness. I understand how ridiculous I sound. I am a beginner blueberry farmer who used to work in business and now finds himself denouncing the organic paperwork cartel in public. There are definitely moments when I hear myself and think, yes, this is exactly the kind of sentence a man says right before he gets politely uninvited from a panel discussion. Still, I think it is true.

The current reality of farming makes this worse, not better. Farmers already operate inside a business defined by weather risk, labor costs, equipment costs, regulatory burdens, volatile demand, and thin margins. USDA’s Economic Research Service forecasts that net farm income in 2026 will decline slightly in nominal terms and more in inflation-adjusted terms. That may sound modest from a distance, but anyone living inside a tight-margin enterprise understands exactly how quickly “slightly” becomes the difference between breathing room and strain.

At the same time, the government itself implicitly acknowledges that certification costs are burdensome enough to require assistance. The Organic Certification Cost Share Program reimburses up to 75 percent of certification costs, capped at $750 per certification category. Think about what that means. The state recognizes that the process has become expensive enough to subsidize. The certifiers charge fees that USDA itself describes as potentially ranging from hundreds to several thousand dollars. Every year. For the privilege of continuing to say you are doing what you are already doing.

I understand the defense of this system. Without certification, people say, anyone can claim anything. Markets get sloppy. Fraud creeps in. Trust erodes. Again, I understand that argument. I even sympathize with it. But I have come to believe that the current certification structure creates a different kind of dishonesty. It encourages the public to confuse paperwork compliance with virtue. It creates the impression that the presence of a seal tells the whole story. It trains consumers to trust logos rather than farmers. It gives too much authority to intermediary institutions whose incentives increasingly revolve around administration, revenue, and self-preservation.

Meanwhile, many small farmers who are deeply committed to organic methods spend their precious time feeding the bureaucracy rather than the soil.

That seems backwards.

I would rather earn trust directly. I would rather tell people how we farm, invite them to see the fields, answer their questions, and stand behind our practices with my own name attached. I would rather put energy into growing exceptional blueberries, caring for the land, and building a farm people can actually encounter than into replaying the annual pageant of portal updates, procedural gotchas, and fee-based absolution.

Maybe that sounds naive. Maybe it is. Again, I am the experienced businessman and the beginner farmer, which is a very awkward combination. It means I can identify operational nonsense quickly while still occasionally planting myself in some other avoidable form of agricultural humility. But one advantage of being new is that I still retain the power of offense. I still remember what normal people think systems are supposed to do. I still have enough outsider in me to look at this process and say: this has become absurd.

Organic farming deserves better than this.

Farmers deserve better than this.

Consumers deserve better than this.

A certification system should protect integrity, support good actors, and strengthen trust in the food system. It should carry a spirit of service. It should feel like an honest bridge between the grower and the eater. It should have enough flexibility to recognize when a farm has done the work in substance and simply run afoul of some hidden administrative incantation. It should have enough humility to remember that the point is clean food and healthy land, not perfect obedience to office choreography.

North Star Farm will keep farming the way we believe is right. We will keep growing blueberries with sun and water and no spray. We will keep telling the truth about how we do it. We will keep inviting people to come see for themselves.

We are simply done pretending that the current certification bureaucracy deserves our loyalty.

Justin
Opinion Desk
Beginner Blueberry Farmer, Recovering Believer in Administrative Good Faith

This Substack is reader-supported.
